When I think of parties and old people, there’s one thing that immediately comes to mind. No, it’s not falling asleep in the birthday cake. It’s bingo! If you’re looking for a way to lightheartedly poke fun at your friend’s ever-increasing age, what better way than to play this favorite retirement home game at their birthday party? Bingo is an easy theme to base your party around, and it will provide a fun activity for at least a couple hours - maybe even more than that if your prizes are really good!

First, you’ll want to print out some bingo cards. You can find these readily available online, or you can make your own using a word or photo editing software. Make sure all the cards are different! As a fun added touch, you could put a star around the birthday person’s age on every card, to show how important that number is for the party! You might not have the standard bingo cage and balls lying around your house, but you can write all the numbers on little pieces of paper and put them in a hat. That will work to randomize it, as long as the caller doesn’t peek! The last thing you’ll need is chips or markers for everyone’s bingo cards. These can be bought inexpensively at art supply stores, or you can just use something small like pennies that you have plenty of in your house.

Of course, the most important part of bingo is the prizes. When you’re shopping for a gift for the birthday person, make sure to get some smaller gifts to give out as prizes for your bingo games! There are lots of great gift ideas here on OverTheHill.com that will make great bingo prizes, too.

In addition to providing a fun activity for the party, a bingo theme lets you make a very creative cake, too. If you or any of the guests have any culinary artistic talent, you should make the cake look like a bingo card with frosting. You could just use numbers, or you could replace some of the numbers with letters spelling “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” The birthday person will love it, and so will all your guests. You don’t have to be in a retirement home to enjoy a bingo party; it’ll be fun for “old folks” of all ages!
